Slate Tolerances That Define Tournament Pool

A professional pool table, on its surface, is a monument of stillness: hundreds of pounds of layered stone and hardwood, dressed in tightly stretched cloth, indifferent to the room around it. That stillness is the illusion. Beneath the cloth, the entire athletic contract of high-level pool rests on geometric thresholds so small they are measured in thousandths of an inch. The structure's mass exists for one purpose: to hold those thresholds fixed against the forces applied to them.
The governing tolerances are not suggestions. The slate playing surface must maintain an overall flatness within plus or minus .020 inches lengthwise and plus or minus .010 inches across the width, with an additional permissible deflection of no more than .030 inches when a concentrated static load of 200 pounds is applied at its center [1]. Where three slate sections meet, each joint must fall within the same plane within .005 inch after leveling and shimming [1]. Rail cushion nose height, expressed as a percentage of the ball's diameter, must fall between 62.5% and 64.5%, with 63.5% as the target [1]. A nose position below the lower bound strikes the ball beneath its center of gravity, producing erratic lift rather than a controlled rebound. One above the upper bound drives the ball downward into the slate, absorbing the energy a player calculated would carry the shot. Corner pocket openings are held between 4.5 and 4.625 inches, with corner cut angles fixed at 142 degrees, plus or minus one degree; side pocket openings run between 5 and 5.125 inches, with side cut angles held at 104 degrees, plus or minus one degree [1].
The cloth covering those tolerances is itself a specification. The material must be non-directional and nap-free, composed of between 80% and 85% combed worsted wool and between 15% and 20% nylon, with 100% combed worsted wool preferred [1]. A napped fabric holds friction unevenly and responds to humidity; the worsted, non-directional construction is what preserves the slide-to-roll transition a player depends on for predictable ball movement.
Routine maintenance carries the same logic. The cloth must be cleaned with a soft horsehair brush, a billiard-fabric cloth cleaner, or a brushless vacuum exclusively [1]. Documented equipment guidance treats a rotating-brush vacuum as unsuitable for this surface, reserving mechanical cleaning to devices that do not disturb the weave's flat profile [1].
No dedicated historical case study for specific mechanical cushion rubber evolution was identified within the verified source deck for this article. Among the tolerances the specification enforces, none addresses how a table's compliance should be re-verified once it enters regular tournament use. What the written thresholds do confirm is precise enough to stand on its own: every dimension in a regulation pool table is a constraint on energy, not a feature of aesthetics.
